APC SUA1000 Smart-UPS 1000VA for servers and voice and data networks Review

APC SUA1000 Smart-UPS 1000VA for servers and voice and data networks
Average Reviews:

After less than two weeks of operation, the unit began to buzz very annoyingly. (Anyone remember what a 60 cycle hum sounds like? It was like that.) The only way to get the buzzing to stop was to physical unplug it from the wall. I called APC support an was told these units "can have an audible hum" and that any replacement unit would probably give me the same problem.
I returned the unit today, as the noise was driving me crazy. Note: You have to contact a human at [...] to do so as their online return system does not work if you got stuff via Amazon. Let's see if I get the refund.
I'm giving it two stars, rather than just one, because it did at least work with my computer, which is more than I can say for the last one.

BOB - Screen Time Manager - Manage Your TV Time Review

BOB - Screen Time Manager - Manage Your TV Time
Average Reviews:

Bob's the best! No more arguing over media time -- all video games, dvds and television shows go through this simple device. Bob is very easy to set up and use. Each user has an unique code, so one child can't "use up" all the time allocated for t.v. One of my children would use all their weekly time in one day, so I am able to set up his account by the day. My daughter, on the other hand, can monitor herself so much better that we set her account up by the week.

TV Time Manager, works with PCs and Video Game Systems. Parents can set time limits and Bob enforces the rules. When a Child's time is used up, BOB turns off the TV. It can manage time for up to 6 users. How BOB Works? - Very simple 3 minute set-up. Plug the TV into BOB (lock in the cord) and plug BOB into the wall! - Parents set time limits--TV shuts off when time is up! - "Time Blocks" prevent usage for specific times of the day (like after school). - Safe for all electronics, including TVs (Plasma/DLP/LCD), video game systems, and computers.* WHY BOB Works? - BOB removes the "TV struggles" - providing a happier and healthier household. - Kids will learn to budget their time. - BOB frees up more time for school work and can lead to higher grades. - When kids are outside playing, they see less junk food on TV and eat less junk food on the couch.

I work from home and use the phone for 8-10 hours each day. I had one of these units with the base and the battery would last for about 4.5 hours. I purchased two more thinking it would be a great way to get through my day, just swap one for the other when the battery started getting low. However the two units that arrived only hold a charge for 2 hours. What happened?

Sony DCR-DVD408 4MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom Review

Sony DCR-DVD408 4MP DVD Handycam Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried this camera during my recent visit to Seattle for Tulip festival. The recording quality is amazing. 5 channel recording is superb. I tried it in 16:9 and 4:3 fine mode with playback on HD Plasma TV. The quality was breathtakingly good. Yet to try photo (claimed to take 4 MP pictures) as photos can only be taken with a memory stick.
Cons:
-Limited Mini DVD space (20 minutes max in fine mode).
-Limited support for combining mini DVDs to a regular sized DVD. Bundled software requires double the size of DVD (9GB) free on the PC to make a movie
-Box contains just the camcorder without any memory stick or DVD. It has to be separately ordered.

Gpx PDL805 8.5 Inch Portable DVD Player Review

Gpx PDL805 8.5 Inch Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this GPX brand portable dvd player a couple days ago and am so far satisfied. It does everything I expect it to. I would give this product 5 stars even were it not for one annoying feature, or rather the lack thereof. There is no menu button on the player itself! If you don't have the remote control or have lost it you won't be able to access the menu of your dvd while you're watching the feature. The only remedy I see to this is to skip to the very last chapter and fast forward to the very end forcing the menu to come up. But who wants to do this? I am a pretty responsible person and am anal about keeping the remote together with the player so this is not too big a problem for me given the remote continues to work. But I definitely see the potential for frustration.
Some things I like include the carrying case and the screen. The picture is pretty sharp, and the sound is decent. And I didn't expect there to be a carrying case in the box but it came with the player which is very nice.
So overall this product is okay. I don't regret buying it but if I knew of the menu button issue beforehand I definitely would've picked a similar player that had such a button ON the player.
And I don't use PAL discs so the player not being able to actually play those types of discs don't bother me one bit, false advertising or not. Too bad for that reviewer though.

APC BE550R 550VA Back-UPS ES 8-Outlet Battery Backup System Review

APC BE550R 550VA Back-UPS ES 8-Outlet Battery Backup System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first, I thought this thing was the tops. It performed well in several power outages/fuse problems/spikes (I'm in a 1939 building & my office has mostly original wiring). After about 8 months, half of the plugs quit working altogether. I moved my important stuff to the other 3 plugs and took everything else off backup. We didn't have a power outage for a long time, so I don't know when the backup quit working on the rest, but it doesn't work anymore, although the alarm still sounds and the power light is still on. But anything plugged in will shut off with a power loss. Overall, I've owned it less than a year and a half. At this point, it's a very expensive extension cord. But the price has gone way down (it's less than half what I paid) from when I purchased mine. Either way, I'm paying more and going for a different brand for the replacement.

Tripp Lite SMART550USB Smart 550VA Line-Interactive UPS (6 Outlets) Review

Tripp Lite SMART550USB Smart 550VA Line-Interactive UPS (6 Outlets)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Generally, the umpire gives the batter 3 strikes and you're out, no? Right u are!
And that's the story with this DumbOffice 550. I've gone through 3 of these clunkers, and every one of them is defective in one way or another.
I will say quickly, and without further delay, that Tripp Lite honored the warranty policy on one of these that qualified. Fortunately, that particular unit completely died. The inverter totally failed, or I suspect it was the inverter. But before discovering I had a major failure, I went and spent the money for a new battery, thinking, "Gee, this thing can't have failed, could it???" The new battery did nothing to the good. New battery, old battery, same result. Unplug the unit from the AC service, and even with NO LOAD, the red LED on the front panel, indicting OVERLOAD would come on, along with the buzzer, and after 4, 5 or 7 seconds, it shuts down. Repeat the process as many times as you like, same result.
But perhaps the most troubling aspect of this situation was Tripp Lite's complete lack of interest for examining this unit to determine why it failed. I offered to return the failed unit to Tripp Lite, AT MY EXPENSE, and they said they did NOT want it returned. This would have been an easy packing job, since I had the replacement unit's packing materials. The failed unit is the exact same model, meaning, the failed unit will fit in the replacement unit's packing box perfectly. No hassle. Just pay the UPS man and be done with it. Tripp Lite DIDN'T WANT IT..
What are these people thinking?
Ok, that's enough on this one. No one likes long reviews.
The warranty replacement unit, referenced above, hums and buzzes, and switches over to the battery frequently. And it doesn't matter which way you twist the SENSITIVITY ADJUST control on the back. And like the other one I mention shortly, it runs quite hot, even when not doing anything, just being plugged in but not delivering any load, and nothing connected to it being turned on. Slap the cabinet one way, then another, bang the top, and sometimes one can get the humming to quiet down. But I'm not going to scream too loudly as #2 still works, with the above shortcomings. I have it connected to an eMachines W3644, which is a penny-pincher computer that has only a Sepmron LE-1200 CPU and only one plug-in card, a modem, so it doesn't represent much of a load. With just this eMachines and a small 19" Asus LCD monitor, when I pull the plug for approaching storms, the battery holds up for only 5-7 minutes-- sometimes perhaps a tad more. That's not much of a load, and not much duration time. But it's better than nothing I suppose.
And the 3rd one, it's behavior is just like the description above, with the same annoying "switch to battery" occurring often. In fact, they are such a pain I have to just turn them off when going to bed so the buzzer doesn't come on and wake me up, which both have done often. This 3rd unit I use as a backup for the TV, VCR and DVD burner. Very same SmartOffice 550, and as with the others, should be called the DumbOffice 550. Or maybe the BuzzBox 550, er, HumBox 550?
Every one of these has a bug-a-boo about it. But I know Tripp Lite can do better because I have yet one more Tripp Lite toy here, a UPS device made back in 2000, which goes by the trade name of "Internet Office 500". That's right, it's now 2010, and this Internet Office 500, long discontinued I suppose, is still rendering outstanding service, TEN YEARS after purchase. I've only had to change the battery. None of the aforementioned headaches discussed above apply to this Internet Office 500.
So what has Tripp Lite done between the Internet Office 500 and this SmartOffice 550? Some corner-cutting, cheap and dirty mistakes, and they should be ashamed. Dear Customer, er, potential customer, look for something better, this is a troublesome unit.
3 out of 3 and all troublesome, is unacceptable. One of these was purchased here thru Amazon, the other via [...]. Doesn't seem to matter where you buy it, it's trouble.

Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0 Review

Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've already been thru two of the popular C. Crane FM transmitters, which are fair at best. And yes I successfully implemented the not-so-secret method of hacking thru the C. Crane units to increase transmitting distance. Even so, static, drop-outs and the need for constant readjusting the radio antenna was the status quo.
Well, the new Whole House FM Transmitter 2.0 completely blows the C. Crane FM transmitter away. The signal and sound is clear as a bell all over my (very large) apartment, unlike with the C. Crane unit, hacked or otherwise. The secret? A huge wire antenna included that you attach to the small antenna wire on the unit, even though the instructions say the extension antenna is "not intended to be used in the USA" thanks to new ridiculous FCC regulations. (Ha-then why include the wire at all -- not that I'm complaining. To paraphrase the late Al "Grandpa" Lewis, "#!&@ the FCC!") The Whole House 2.0 with the included extension antenna is simply the best home fm transmitter available.

This little converter is unique. Yes it only puts out 150 watts. BUT it is the only one I have found that has no noisy fan. It is silent as the night. I had it run a small 15" lcd tv and satellite receiver in my RV. When I upgraded the TV to a 22" LCD with built in DVD player, adding the satellite receiver it struggled. Every once in awhile it would make a beep noise and the TV would turn off. I knew I needed to upgrade to a little bigger one. I have tried a few 300-400 watt models but the fan noise is too loud, you can hear it. Distracting while watching a movie. I'm considering just running two of these STP-150 (one for each piece of gear) to keep things silent. This little things grunts out plenty of power I was surprised.

PAL to Ntsc Tv Video Game System Converter
when I was looking the internet for a PAL to NTSC converter, I read some technical info trying to educate myself before I bought. Comparing multiple products in the market, I found this one that promised to do the job and I even look for their tech info trying to find a contradiction somewhere as i was comparing this product of ~$40 with another of ~$140... so, obvious savings right!... I was wrong... from all tech specs they "forget" to give you just ONE that it is written all over the packing box... too late... "This converter output will only work with 50HZ NTSC TV video system" in other words, it only does HALF the work of the PAL to NTSC convertion... there are NO 50HZ TV in USA that I know of... so at the end you will still have an image scrolling vertically and just got some color on it. Sony DVP-FX820 8-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black Review

Sony DVP-FX820 8-Inch Portable DVD Player, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research before choosing the Sony DVP-FX820 and what sold me were all the great reviews (thanks everyone!) I was leaning toward a player with a larger screen, but I trusted what I read about the picture quality of this unit... and I have to say, I received it today and I am amazed. It's much better than I expected! This little dvd player has a better picture than my HD TV! And although the speaker sound is a little hollow (no real base) the volume more than makes up for it... I've heard other players- or should I say I've tried to hear other players- the volume is wonderful on this one, the sound totally acceptable via the speakers and the sound is incredible when I use my 10 yr old Sony Studio Monitor headset.
While I was shopping around, I was a bit concerned about what would happen to my full screen DVDs on this widescreen unit. I read about other units that really stretched the image out so that it looked bad. When I tested this unit, I first saw this approx 5" x 4" image and thought, boy that's weird... it was still ok but I didn't understand it until I read the manual. You can change the format from "Normal" (which is that box that's narrower than the screen), or it can be changed to Full. The Full screen mode doesn't look bad at all. Everyone looks slightly heavier but not distorted... I flipped back and forth between the modes several times to see if I could really see the difference, and it wasn't bad at all- nothing looked distorted.
The battery is nearly the size of the base of the unit but it is very slim and hardly adds thickness to the until (I had read on other untils how the battery was a real detractor- but not with this unit.)
The remote is just the right size- it's big enough where you wouldn't lose it too easily but it's smaller than a normal tv/dvd remote. I didn't want one of those credit card sized ones! And it couldn't be easier to use.
I started out wanting a 10" screen but I changed my mind based on the reviews- and I'm very happy I went with the 8". After I thought about it, I realized that I didn't want to feel like I was carrying around a laptop- I already have a laptop and so why even bother spending $ on a portable DVD player? :)
I highly recommend this Sony unless your heart is really set on a larger one. I now think this size is perfect.
So anyway, I was very happy with the unit before I plugged in my headset. With my headset, this player blows me away- I'm amazed at the quality. And now I've got to look for a case that's worthy of it. :)
UPDATE... I found a great case worthy of this DVD player!! I purchased the Targus DVD001 13 Portable DVD Player Case from Amazon. It is good quality, nicely padded and fits not only the player, but also my large headphones which do fold and all the accessories. It holds a lot of DVDs if you take them out of their cases but I don't like to do that, so it only holds about 4 if you keep the DVDs in their plastic cases. This is my own issue with the case. But I love it and would recommend it to everyone. Oh, it also has a strap that staps across the DVD player to keep it snug and also a divider attached by velcro to separate the dvd player from the accessories you pack with it. Great Bag!

Logitech diNovo Media Desktop Laser Review

My install of this system went fairly smoothly, but it is an amazingly lengthy process, with many stages involving updates and bluetooth reconnects and such. Still, it all worked out and it never left me wondering if I was doing the right thing or not, unlike many hardware/software installations.
The keyboard, mouse and pad have all worked pretty well for me, and the media pad shows great promise as a home theater controller, but I have a couple of quibbles:
1) the mouse charging station is a piece of junk relative to the rest of the system - it's tippy, you have to fiddle to feel that the mouse is making contact, and the power cable easily falls out
2) the keyboard, on waking up, often repeats (many times) one of the characters you type in
3) I _suspect_ the software of periodically bogging my PC down, though I don't know that for sure yet
4) I can assign the keyboard media button to bring up iTunes (and other applications), but the media pad media buttong is not given the same choices for some reason.
Overall I'm very impressed with this, but I AM COUNTING ON LOGITECH to improve the software such that it sees its full potential.

Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna Review

Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will preface my remarks with something that probably does not need to be said. Indoor antennas perform differently in various locations, so my experience may mirror yours or not. Having said that, I feel I have earned the right to comment and the obligation to share my experience in attempting to find the best antenna.
General background: I have a 37" Toshiba LCD TV and I live on the 7th floor of a high rise apartment building in downtown Nashville. Nashville is in a basin surrounded by hills with TV towers in several locations in the metro area. I do not live far from any of them, probably less than 15 miles from the farthest. However, I do live in the middle of skyscrapers ... and of course those Middle Tennessee hills.
I recently decided that I couldn't totally trust Comcast to deliver programming since on the night of the final presidential debate of 2008 they, for reasons that are still not totally clear to me, decided to disconnect my service to connect someone else in the building. I'm sure it was all just a mistake; but during the last ten years, it has happened a couple of other times, so let's just say I was not happy that evening. I was forced to drink a six pack of Miller Lite in a bar a few blocks away with people that I am sure have many virtues but did not share my political opinions. BUT a guy has to do what he has to do to watch history in the making.
Comcast had my service restored early the next morning; but I had already decided to get an antenna for the next time one of their installers made a mistake. I ordered the following antennas from Amazon over a period of several days. (I hope my friends like my rejects as Christmas presents ... just kidding.)
1) Philips PHDTV1 Silver Sensor UHF/HDTV Digital Indoor TV Antenna
2) GE 24775 Quantum Indoor HDTV Antenna
3) Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna
4) Philips High Performance Amplified Indoor Uhf/Vhf/Fm/HDTV Antenna
5) Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna
Here are my results:
1) The Phillips PHDTV1 Silver Sensor was not the antenna I needed; but that's my fault. It's a purely UHF antenna; and four of the stations I must have are VHF stations: ABC, NBC, CBS & PBS. It works fine for the others; but obviously I should not have ordered this one.
2) The GE 24775 Quantum worked well actually. I would have settled on this one because it picked up all stations well (except the ABC station sometimes). However, it requires electricity and has the brightest little blue light on it's front that I've ever seen in my life. BUT it works well; and it is stylish. I kept looking.
3) The Terk was a monster. It did not work well; and it looked like a rooftop antenna sitting in my living room. HORRIBLE.
4) The Phillips amplified antenna didn't perform well either ... not half as well as the GE Quantum.
5) Imagine my shock when I found that the Philips SDV2210/17 was the best of the bunch! Not only does it pick up every single station with the best signal of any of them, it is also the cheapest and requires no electricity. It has a low profile, so even though it does look like exactly what it is, it's not obtrusive at all. The price has gone up a little since I got mine earlier this week; but THIS IS THE BEST ... at least for me. Considering that it is half or less of some of the others, it's definitely worth a try.

CyberPower PP1500SWT4 Smart App Sinewave UPS - 1500VA/1000W AVR 8-Out Tower SNMP/HTTP Review

I purchased this UPS to isolate my computers and network disk drives from the AC line in a home office. The unit has worked well for that purpose. It has not had to engage too many times since I installed it, but it has seemed to do the job when it did. I chose this unit because I wanted a UPS that puts out a real sign wave AC waveform when it goes to battery operation. Most home office units put out more like a square wave (cheaper to produce) that does not work well with some modern computer power supplies that are power factor corrected. It fits neatly under my computer table, and shows basic functioning on the front panel. There is also software (both a personal edition and a business addition with more features) that runs on a computer connected through a USB or serial port. This software has very useful information including how much power is being drawn through the unit (on line or battery power), voltage, etc. as well as a history of actions taken. The only issue I found, and it is minor, is that my computer had trouble recognizing the connected UPS when interfaced through a USB hub. I talked to the manufacturer, who was very responsive, and told me it works better when plugged into a direct USB port on the computer. I tried that, and it has worked for me. The total load in my office is normally only about 300 watts as reported by the UPS, so it will power my office on batteries for more than 30 minutes--which almost always outlasts any power outage I experience. The software can be configured to notify the attached computer of a power failure (batteries engaged) and have it shut down the computer when the batteries get below a certain level. I have not had time to try this feature. There are also several test modes that can be accessed through the software to verify operation, for example, by simulating a power failure. I found this very useful to give me confidence in the unit. I am not sure what else to say. It provides sign wave backup AC at a reasonable price.

This radio only worked for two days then the graphics displayed started getting grainy and disappered. The DVD/cd player would never accept any disc. Now only the radio works but with no graphics there's only the one channel it was on at failure. Overall this unit is a huge waist of money. The quality of absolute products is an epic fail. When I tried to return it they said it was a bad install. Do not buy this product.

APC Back-UPS XS1500VA Battery Backup Review

APC Back-UPS XS1500VA Battery Backup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a couple of APC UPS and surge protection products. So far this is the most functional. The features:
1. The unit can be positioned vertically (best for saving space) or horizontally (lay flat or mounted to a server rack).
2. It has a very excellent boxy design that gives an elegant and modern feel.
3. There are 8 outlets in total (6 outlets are battery protected and voltage regulated, which means less dependency on the battery and longer replacement life; 2 outlets are surge-protected for printers and office machines).
4. The included PowerChute Personal Edition is to be combined with the data cable that, when connected to your computer via USB, provides excellent control and communication between the UPS, computer and user/administrator.
a. You will know exactly how much load is taxing the UPS in real-time; Turn on/off equipment to check.
b. Shut-down function to preserve data or battery.
c. Audible and visual alarm indication on current condition.
5. Hot-swap battery without turning off the UPS.
The cons? Heavy! But then of course it only needs to be set and forget. Expensive! Not for a typcial user. Although the features should be made available for everyone.
This particular model is a little overkill. I connected a P4 3GHz (with 3 internal SATA HDD, DVDROM, DVD-RW), 21" CRT, Apple PBG4 laptop, 2 external LaCie HDD and 1 external CD-R and I still haven't reached half of the available power. Buy this only if they offer a special price/rebate. Otherwise, go with the lower model XS/RS1000 and it will suite an power user just perfectly.

Monster Cable Home Theatre Powerbar 2100 with Clean Power Stage 2 v2.0 Review

Monster Cable Home Theatre Powerbar 2100 with Clean Power Stage 2 v2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first, I was highly skeptical when the guy at the electronics store told me that the Monster Powerbar would dramatically improve the overall quality of my HT system (55" Widescreen/HDTV, Yamaha HTR 5560 digital reciever, JVC 7-Disc DVD/DVD-A changer, ICBM-1 bass manager, and the good ole VCR all plugged into one power strip). The only reason I was there in the first place was to upgrade my stereo floor speakers. The salesman was so adamant of the value of the Powerbar 2100 that he offered me a $100 discount and a 30-Day no-questions-asked guarantee. So I figured, "What do I have to lose?"
I first tested my new speakers without the Powerbar. Later, I hooked up the powerbar, plugged all of my components into it, and listened again. The difference in audio quality was immediately noticeable. There was enhanced clarity in the mid- and high ranges and the bass was much deeper and more defined. Next, I tried the television picture. Again, the clarity of the picture was remarkable (as was the clarity of the DVD picture).
Finally, I tried radio reception. While there was slight difference in clarity in the FM stations, the AM stations came in CRYSTAL CLEAR, with absolutely zero interference from the TV or air conditioner.
All of this in addition to the enhanced protection from severe power surges. If there was any negative criticism at all, it would be the sheer length of the power stip itself (almost 2 feet long), which is necessary to effectively separate the audio protection from the video protection.
All in all, though, definitely worth the investment!

The fact is, analog audio equipment is sensitive to a different type of noise than video, just as video is sensitive to a different type of noise than digital, and so on. In the past, manufacturers have used filters to combat the problem of noise introduced via power sources. Unfortunately, the filters were not optimized to attenuate at the different frequencies that are unique to digital, analog audio, and video realms. Products that managed to deliver truly cleaner AC power were thousands of dollars in price, out of reach for most people. Enter Head Monster Noel Lee. An uncompromising audiophile, Lee joined forces with Richard Marsh, the world’s foremost expert on AC power, to develop affordable solutions to AC power problems. The result? Monster Clean Power.
More Than Just Surge! -Monster Clean Power The following overviews of Monster’s isolated, specially tuned Clean Power filters demonstrate the methodology behind Clean Power’s development. The higher the Clean Power stage, the more advanced the noise filtration. The more advanced the noise filtration, the higher the level of component-to-component isolation.

Isolated Clean Power Digital Filters Optimized to reduce noise generated by digital equipment digital filters isolate digital components from connected analog audio and video components for maximum rejection of interference.

Isolated Clean Power Video Filters Optimized to reduce noise generated by video equipment, video filters isolate video components from connected digital and analog audio components for maximum rejection of interference.

Isolated Clean Power Analog Audio Filters Optimized to provide maximum noise rejection for sensitive analog audio components, audio filters isolates audio components from connected digital and video components for maximum rejection of interference.

Isolated Clean Power Ultra-High Current Filter Optimized for maximum noise rejection, ultra-high current filters provide maximum current to high power components such as surround sound amplifiers.
Reference Home Theater Power Monster PowerCenters also offer the most comprehensive home theater system protection available, featuring higher joule ratings for faster acting, full capacity surge protection.
