I doubt I'll ever get to know the long term quality of this product because its going back ASAP.
I've spent years waiting for all my computer workstation gear to become relatively quiet. Over the past couple of years most computer & peripheral manufacturers have begun taking noisiness into account when designing their products. Finally, with the purchase of my most recent MAC several months ago (replacing a rather noisy 2005 MAC G5) all my computer components are now whisper quiet. That is, until today...
When I first plugged in the APC BR1300G I assumed the start up noise from the fan would subside after a self test of some sort or another. No dice! The noise emanating from this device has undone all the years of gradual improvement in noise pollution in my office. Its probably the single loudest piece of equipment I've installed in my office since my very earliest IBM 8088 XT clones. By itself, it is louder than all my most recently banished noisy components combined together. Mind you, that is with the UPS sitting several feet away from me and behind my desk. I don't understand why any cooling fans should be this loud in this day and age.
By the way, this unit replaces my 5 year old APC XS 1000 which was whisper quiet. I would've kept it except that it began to suffer a recurring overload fault. Aside from that, it worked wonderfully for the 5 years that I had it.
