(More customer reviews)I was looking for a TV that I could use in the event of an extended power failure as happened in my part of Houston a couple of years ago after hurricane Ike. At that time a small battery-powered black and white TV I had which ran on 8 "D" cells maintained my wife and I's sanity, but now it wouldn't work any more since broadcasts are all-digital. When I looked for a digital replacement the problem I encountered was that virtually all the models have Lithium Polymer rechargeable batteries, which are only good in a PF until they are discharged. However, most, including this one, come with a 12V car cigarette lighter adapter. The solution I found was to buy an adapter from Autozone which has a cigarette lighter socket and clamps designed to connect directly to a 12V car battery. However my solution is to use 2 6V "lantern" batteries, each of which contains 4 D cells in series, I believe. With another pair of clamps (from Frys - intended for a test meter) I am able to provide a 12V source of power using 2 lantern batteries in series. I tried this with this TV, and it works perfectly!
However I also liked this model because it is 9 inch. includes a DVD player, plus a USB Flash drive socket and sockets for SD and MS flash memory cards. It also includes an antenna with a magnetic base (probably intended to be mounted on the metal roof of an automobile)
Trying the autosearch feature, I was able to get about 4 stations with the included aerial and about 8 with a rabbit ears, with a perfect, clear picture. A lot of people complain about the small number of stations that they can pick up, but I suspect the key is where you are located and the size of antenna you are using. I also tried the DVD player - worked perfectly, and was able to run the unit as an electronic picture frame with a slide show in sequential or random mode with a choice of transitions. So not only do I have my emergency TV, but I also have a portable DVD for the car and an electronic picture frame. Most of these TV's are 7 inch. 9 inch is small enough, so I would definitely go for the 9 inch. All in all, a great buy which I would thoroughly recommend.
